Launceston product James Hansen is continuing his push towards a maiden Olympics berth, taking out his first Australian championships at the Albie Thomas mile in Bankstown, New South Wales.

The 26-year-old was forced to share the title with New South Welshman Rorey Hunter as the two were unable to be split on the line, coming home in a time of 4:14.60.

The pair were beaten to the finish by American Sam Ellis but the enormity of the achievement certainly wasn't lost on former Riverside High School student Hansen.
"[It was a] special race to be a part of and awesome to share my first national victory with a good mate," he said on social media platform, Instagram.
The state's third-ever sub-four-minute miler, who now resides in Victoria but still races under a Tasmanian banner, is set to return home for the Christmas Carnivals series, competing in the mile at both the Devonport and Burnie events this weekend.
