The No Interest Loans Scheme (NILS) is a not-for-profit charity registered in Tasmania and supported by state and federal governments and corporate supporters. Our aim is to help low-income Tasmanians who have a health care card or pension card access affordable credit to help you pay for all sorts of things including washing machines, fridges, car repairs and tyres and TVs and we can even help with essential medical and dental costs.
At this time of year, we would like families to know that we also do loans for educational purposes for products such as computers and tablets, textbooks, school uniforms and even school trips, and the good news is that you only pay back exactly what you borrow.
NILS is Tasmania's own community lending service that operates a state-wide network with ongoing support from 97 Delivery Partners, comprising more than 300 volunteer Loan Ocers.
There are no fees and no interest applied, and we provide loans from $300 to $1500. Repayments are made through Centrepay deduction and the maximum repayment amount is $40 per fortnight (on a $1500 loan).
Over the past 16 years, NILS has shown that a well-managed no interest loans program can have a significant and positive impact on individuals, families and children's lives. The key program impact is the provision of essential household items, making lives more manageable and assisting low-income earners to have an acceptable standard of living.
