Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio has started its installation of a "psychedelic trip" inside the Dark Ride at Penny Royal, with an original techno, house, and organic sound score; visual projections; and a laser show.
Director Robin Fox said the ride, called Hypnos Cave, would send participants through the stages of sleep.
"There will be dreams, nightmares, revelations - basically we've taken over what is essentially a boat ride and we've just transformed it using sound and light into an abstract psychedelic experience," he said.
"It's a very unique opportunity. I've never done any work that involves taking over a boat and going into a series of caves, it's phenomenal."
Four Launceston video artists are working on the project, including Darryl Rogers from Soma Lumia who worked on the Dark Ride originally, which tells the story of convict Matthew Brady.
"It's very exciting, we've been developing this for about six months now - preparing for today," he said.
"I think people will have a really good time. The lasers, the video, the lights, I think it's going to blow their minds."
Hypnos Cave runs on Sunday, January 19, $13.
