Councillor Ian Goninon suggested the committee to explore achievable recycling initiatives in the region by partnering with schools, groups and organisations to look at ways to reduce waste.
"I believe if we involved the community...there's a whole heaps of things that can be done," he said.
"The $1.2 million cost to council, even if we can reduce that cost by 10 to 15 per cent...by looking at things that aren't going to be expensive but can help the recycling part of things."

Deputy mayor Richard Goss said recycling bins in parks in the region should be looked at too as other councils had them.
NMC already recycles a number of materials but is investigating if CDs, DVDs, x-rays, printer cartridges, bread tags, glasses and aluminium coffee pods can be recycled.
