A push for the City of Launceston to debate the issue of pill testing has been put on hold, with one of the councillors behind the plan saying it's evident there isn't yet a "clear pathway to action" at a council level.

After the Hobart City Council's decision in July to provide in-principle support for pill testing at major events and festivals in the council area, a number of Launceston councillors accelerated their plan to bring forward a similar motion for debate.
The Launceston municipality will be a festival hotspot over the next few months, with MONA FOMA, Party in the Paddock and A festival called PANAMA all highlights on the calendar.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Party in the Paddock's organisers, with the support of the Tasmanian Greens, delivered a petition to the State Parliament last month calling on the Hodgman government to allow pill testing trials at events and festivals.
Launceston councillor Andrea Dawkins had initially signalled that she and several of her council colleagues discussed bringing forward a motion to debate pill testing before the end of 2019.
"I've had a think about when to bring it [on] or what to do in this space," she said on Monday. "It's obviously quite problematic for council."
"All we [could] really do is write the Minister of Police a letter saying that 'City of Launceston supports pill testing' and I just don't know if that's strong enough.
"I cannot find a clear pathway to action on this one, apart from actually getting involved [in campaigning on the issue] myself, which is what I'm going to do."

"There's certainly some interest to do it [but] I spoke to [City of Launceston] general manager [Michael Stretton] and a few others and it's just not a council issue," Cr Daking said.
However, neither Cr Dawkins nor Cr Daking ruled out moving a pill testing motion in the future.
The state government has consistently held to the view that no level of drug-taking is acceptable.
