The state government on Monday announced it would throw its support behind the bid which could see world-class players play at UTAS Stadium.

Mr Hodgman said games played in Launceston could put the city and the state on the world stage and provide economic benefits.

"The 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup Final, for example, was watched by an estimated 750 million viewers worldwide, and was the most-watched soccer match in American history with nearly 23 million viewers," he said.

"Our involvement will importantly also encourage more Tasmanian women and girls to participate in sport, which is critical for building a healthier Tasmania."

He said there would be an opportunity for the state to host training venues across the state in addition to games.

Football Tasmania chief executive Matt Bulkeley said Tasmania had one of the highest level of female soccer players in the country.

"Women's football has been going from strength to strength in Tasmania for over 40 years," he said.

"We are seeing a huge uptake in football from younger women especially and being able to see the best players in the world playing in their home state would be a game-changer for many young Tasmanian women."

Mr Bulkeley said the state's participation rate in the sport bode well for the bid.

"With more than one in five Tasmanian households actively involved in football, the Tasmanian football community has a very powerful voice," he said.

Labor spokesman David O'Byrne said the party supported the government's decision to back the bid.

"What a great thing it would be to have young Tasmanians to see some of the best football players in the world run around Tasmania's ovals and inspire the next generation of football players," he said.
