Tasmanian Labor senator Carol Brown said Tasmania is the only state which does not have on-the-ground operations from all emergency food relief providers who receive funding from the Commonwealth.

"Only one operates in Tasmania. Instead, a local organisation Loaves and Fishes, meets demand for 70 per cent of emergency food relief in Tasmania," Senator Brown said.

"However, Loaves and Fishes have been excluded from receiving Federal government funding support because they are a Tasmanian organisation."

Senator Brown said without funding of just $150,000 a year Loaves and Fishes would have to close down its operations in Southern Tasmania, which provides food to 134 community programs.

"I would urge the Premier to pick up the phone [to] the Prime Minister to demand that Tasmanians are not excluded from Federal government assistance for emergency food relief," Senator Brown said.

In October 2018, the state government committed $700,000 to Loaves and Fishes, $250,000 for startup costs and $150,000 a year for three years.

A government spokesman said federal funding was an issue for federal members.
