Now he has taken up a new role as chief executive of Launceston's The Benevolent Society.
"I wanted to spend my years doing something that was providing a community service," Mr Spinks said. "It was a passion of mine to get into that kind of position where I can be giving back to the community."
"This position came up, and I was fortunate enough that [chairman] Don Jones saw something in me to have me on board."
Mr Spinks said he was delighted to now be part of the organisation, mainly due to the organisation's passionate volunteers.
"The people we help are the people who are the most disadvantaged in our community and they really need our assistance," he said.
"We're here for that emergency relief, to give them something to get them through the next week. They're coming here because they've got high bills, or daily things that are difficult to get through.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"I think we provide a wonderful service in giving them the food hampers, and helping them out with clothing and toiletries and sometimes with financial hardship.
"It's just a delight to be working in this space."
Mr Spinks said Christmas was a difficult time for the city's disadvantaged people.
"When something like Christmas comes around when you want to do something a little bit special for your children, it makes it very difficult for them," he said.
"We have a toy distribution which is supported by the Empty Stocking Appeal, which is fantastic. It means they can have a special Christmas Day."
Mr Spinks said their appointment book was very full leading up to Christmas.
"But that's what we're here for. To provide help for people."
Any donations made to The Benevolent Society are passed back on to people in need. For those wanting to donate or volunteer, visit lbs.org.au or call 6344 4213.
