College of Business and Economics Executive Dean Associate Professor Stuart Crispin said the course was developed as part of the university's strategic vision to offer regionally-connected courses that help to build the skills and attributes required to achieve business success in regional areas.

"The Graduate Certificate in Business Studies provides a pathway for Northern business professionals wanting to take on senior leadership roles, as well as helping them qualify for future entry into our MBA plan," he said.

"It follows extensive engagement with the North and North West business communities that identified a skills development gap in our postgraduate offerings.

"We haven't really done a lot in postgraduate education in Northern Tasmania since about 2013 - we've been quite Hobart focussed ... this is really an attempt for us to build that cohort again in places like Launceston and Burnie."

Assoc Professor Crispin said the course is mainly geared towards current professionals looking to gain the necessary skills for climbing the business ladder.

"I think it's critically important because what we're seeing is this continual need for people to re-skill or up-skill as they move through their careers," he said.

"Gone are the days when you could just finish high school, finish university and get a bachelors - I think we're seeing a constant need for people to look at extending and broadening their skills so this does help them build that ability as their industries in the North of the state grow and develop."

The course will be a mix of online learning and intense weekend workshops with businesses across the North and North West to see how they succeed in the regional business climate.

"By developing business credentials within these regions, we will help create the right environment for innovation and entrepreneurship to thrive," Assoc Professor Crispin said.

The one-year course will be available from February 2020.
