The 24-year-old had made tournament history in 2018, becoming the first back-to-back singles winner after the Belgian defended the crown she claimed as a qualifier.
Mertens also won the 2018 doubles title with her Dutch partner Demi Schuurs to boast an unblemished 16-0 tournament win-loss record.

"I am so excited to return to Hobart in 2020. It is such a beautiful city and I have so many wonderful memories at this tournament," she said.
Mertens broke into the WTA top 100 for the first time only after taking out the 2017 Hobart International.
Since the state dominance, she has reached the 2018 Australian Open semi-finals and US Open quarter-finals this year, finishing the past two years ranked inside the world's top 20 in singles and doubles.
Mertens is currently ranked No.6 in doubles and is also the reigning US Open doubles champion.
