Tasmanian stalwart Bailey is soon expected to be announced as the replacement for Greg Chappell on the national selection panel.
Bailey, while still playing domestic cricket, will join Trevor Hohns and coach Justin Langer on the panel.
"It's good that we're able to have someone in the selector's role that is seeing the group of players that are playing at the moment," Smith told reporters on Tuesday.
"He knows T20 cricket really well - he has played a lot of T20 cricket and he's up with the times in a way just because he has been playing in recent times.
"If he gets that appointment, I think it will be a good one."
Smith said the 37-year-old Bailey, a former Australian limited overs captain, would bring a wealth of knowledge to the selection panel.
"Very experienced player ... he has captained Australia in international cricket, one-dayers and T20s," Smith said.
"He understands the game very well and I think he would do a terrific job."
