It may be a smaller Tasmanian draft crop than previous years, but the nerves are certainly still large for Hobart's Mitch O'Neill.

Heading into what may be two of the most important nights in the 18-year-old's life, AFL Tasmania state manager Craig Notman was nothing but complimentary of the Southern talent.
Admitting he may need to wait until Thursday, with only the first round of selections announced the day before, Notman sang O'Neill's praises.

"I think Mitch will come into play in the second or third round from the conversations we've had at this point," he said.
"The beauty for us is, his footy stuff stacks up really, really well. His footy smarts, he picks up the game really well, he sees it and the beauty for me is that Mitch has shown the ability to rise to each single level that he plays.
"He's played well going from division two nationals going into the NAB League to nationals playing Allies level and I think that's a really good sign for someone that's going to be able to play well at the next level too and someone who is going to be able to acquit themselves moving through the ranks."
With O'Neill pencilled as a potential suitor to a role at the Western Bulldogs by AFL Media, Notman believes with the live pick trading in action, his protegee could well and truly go anywhere.
It isn't just O'Neill capturing the minds of AFL clubs and recruiters however with Northern pair, Launceston's Jared Dakin and three-time State League premiership player Rhyan Mansell, who recently signed for SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens, throwing their hat in the ring.
"There's plenty of things that hold Jared in a really good stead - the character and everything he does. He can find the ball, he competes really strongly, he's a really good leader and he's got great character.

"He actually shows a lot of traits that clubs are looking for."
Tasmania Devils and Lauderdale defender Matt McGuinness is also in the running to get picked up following a strong year in NAB League competition and has been accepted as a Next Generation Academy nomination from North Melbourne.
