Tasmania Police Detective Craig Fox said about 5am on Monday, a stolen white Nissan Navara was driven through the front doors of the Ravenswood IGA, causing significant damage.
Police believe the Navara had been stolen from a South Launceston home about 4.40am.
According to Detective Fox, two men were seen getting out of the vehicle, taking a quantity of cigarettes before fleeing the scene towards Ravenswood.
One man was wearing a charcoal-coloured hooded top and three-quarter length black shorts. The other man was carrying a white bag.
In other news:
Detective Fox said the owners of the IGA would undoubtedly be upset and frustrated by the incident.
"It's not so much the commission of the crime and the quantity of cigarettes, it's the amount of damaged caused by these senseless acts which are quite often the worst thing for the business owners," he said.
Police would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the Navara driving through the Launceston area between 4.40am and 5am, or who may have seen the burglary or the two men running from the IGA.
Anyone with information, including CCTV or dash-cam footage, is urged to contact Launceston Police on 131 444, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestopperstas.com.au.
