Launceston's central business district came alive on Friday as Christmas in the City and the Mad Hatter's Twilight Festival took over the streets to create a buzzing atmosphere.

Hundreds gathered to see this year's Christmas tree light up the night sky just before 9pm in Brisbane Street Mall and walked along the Quadrant Mall to explore the festival.
The main stage on Brisbane Street featured dance numbers and choir performances before the famous man in red hit the red button to light up this year's Christmas tree to close out the event.
Three-year-old Max Bell was very excited to see Santa and said he wanted to ask him for everything on his Christmas list
"I want a Rusty Rivets set," he said.
"I want costumes, can I have a superman one and a batman one."

The two events were held in conjunction with one another after the success of joining the two last year and it proved a hit again with families, teenagers and everyone in between taking to the streets to join in.
The Quadrant Mall also featured live entertainment for the crowd perusing the shop fronts, with Heartbeats performing and Alice in Wonderland characters walking around.
It is the fourth year Phillipa Simmons and her family have attended the Christmas in the City event.
She said it was a great family event and a way to get into the festive spirit.
"We come each year to support local Launceston and to keep these fun activities going for kids," she said.
"My kid's have been for the last four years and they have really enjoyed it, so we will probably keep up the tradition."
