Jones, 43, of West Launceston, appeared by video link in the Supreme Court on Thursday when it was confirmed a sentence appeal would go ahead, and considerations were also being made over an appeal against conviction.
The court confirmed that the sentencing appeal would be based on a ground that it was manifestly excessive.
Defence counsel Fabiano Cangelosi requested a transcript of Justice Peter Evans' sentencing remarks from June to determine if there was grounds to appeal the conviction.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Jones was sentenced to 22 years' jail with a non-parole period of 13 years, dated from February 2, 2017, for the murder of Mr Breward, 22, on New Year's Day in 2017.
Jones beat, waterboarded and suffocated Mr Breward while seeking information about the theft of his Nissan Patrol.
Jones failed in his attempt to obtain legal aid to fund the appeal and was required to find private legal representation.
The directions hearing was adjourned until December 5 to give Jones' legal representation time to analyse the transcript and determine if a conviction appeal would be pursued.
