The permits will allow mobile food vendors to operate at one of a number of designated areas.
These include Lions Park, Bradys Lookout, Exeter Park, Greens Beach Park and the Windsor Community Precinct.
West Tamar mayor Christina Holmdahl said it was important the council didn't rush any decision on food vans, and deliver a straightforward and clear policy for vendors to follow.
"From the time we received interest from food van operators to grant food van permits in the municipality, we wanted to have a clear and established policy for it," she said.
In other news:
Cr Holmdahl said a lot of things were considered in the policy, including making sure static businesses were not affected by food vans.
"On the hole the policy we've approved is a good one," she said.
There are three permit varieties that are available for vendors that require yearly renewal.
There are two six month permits costing $350 for on-peak months (October to March) and $250 for off-peak (April to September). A year-round permit will cost $450.
Eligible Non-for-profit groups or charity groups will be charged 50 per cent of whichever permit they apply for.
Vans can operate from 7am to 9pm, seven days a week in the designated areas.
The policy grants the general manager powers to terminate the permit if the permit terms are breached by a food van.
