The state's Asbestos Compensation Commissioner has received 158 applications in the eight years since a compensation scheme was established for those exposed to the harmful affects of the fibrous building material
There were 16 new compensation claims made over the past financial year which included 10 imminently fatal claims, three non-imminently fatal claims, and three claims from family members of a diseased person.
Six imminently fatal claims for an asbestos-related disease were accepted which included one claim from a family member.
Imminently fatal claims apply to a person with less than two years life expectancy as a result of an asbestos-related disease and can attract a lump sum payment of $318,394.
Of the nine overall accepted claims, half related to mesothelioma and two to interstitial lung disease.
Payments from the Asbestos Compensation Fund in 2018-19 reached $3.82 million.
The balance of the fund at the end of the financial year was $20.3 million.
The fund received $7.2 million in asbestos levy contributions.
