But for Nick Cody, stand-up, host of the Triple M Big Breakfast radio show, and regular on TV shows such as Have You Been Paying Attention and Talking 'Bout Your Generation, that's exactly what happened.
He may just be "an idiot with a microphone" as he puts it, but his way with words has taken him to Afghanistan, Bahrain, Lebanon, Dubai, Singapore, and New York.
"It's ridiculous," he said. "I'm very lucky to get to see parts of the world that people might not go to on a holiday, but that are amazing to check out."
