On Wednesday the 20th anniversary of the Cancer Council fundraiser was launched, with the goal raising $1 million across six state events in March next year.
Relay for Life state manager Anthony Edwards said the event had raised more than $14.1 million in the past 19 years.
"Since 2001 we have had 82 events held ... we've spread ourselves across the many communities here in Tasmania," he said.
In other news:
"We've had over 103,000 people participate in relay. It's an extraordinary number and when you think about those people ... it's about why they relay.
"It's to celebrate, remember and to fight back."
Organisers are hoping for record numbers to mark the event's 20th anniversary, with relays in Launceston, Hobart, the Huon Valley, the North-West Coast, Circular Head and North-East.
Cancer Council Tasmania chief executive Penny Egan said relay was not just an event, but rather an experience.
"For every person who is walking with their mother or sister or father who has survived a cancer diagnosis, there is a group alongside them who are walking in remembrance of someone who has lost their life to this disease," she said.
