The state had 765 housing finance commitments for owner occupation in September in trend terms, the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated.

That was the biggest total since February and up from the recent low of 731 in June.

Such commitments plus refinancing increased to 1088 in September.

That was the most since November last year.

It was not clear how much the Reserve Bank's recent run of cutting the cash rate had contributed to the recent growth.

The cash rate is now at a record low 0.75 per cent, and further cuts are possible.

The Reserve Bank kept the cash rate unchanged at its Tuesday meeting, and suggested rates would stay low for some time.

"Given global developments and the evidence of the spare capacity in the Australian economy, it is reasonable to expect that an extended period of low interest rates will be required in Australia to reach full employment and achieve the inflation target," governor Philip Lowe said after the meeting.

"The board will continue to monitor developments, including in the labour market, and is prepared to ease monetary policy further if needed to support sustainable growth in the economy, full employment and the achievement of the inflation target over time."
