Several Tasmanian lakes and sections of rivers will be closed to general recreational fishing for periods because of the upcoming World Fly Fishing Championships.

According to the championships website: "Competitors will be guaranteed totally private angling access to the competition waters with no interruption from outside influences."
"They will be fishing in a pristine environment for trout that are a product of breeding and surviving in their own natural environment.
"The only visitors you may see whilst fishing will be the unique variety of wildlife that inhabits Tasmania."
Teams from 23 countries are expected to compete.
The Inland Fisheries Service said state government support for the event included temporary regulation changes for competition waters aimed at minimising disruptions.
The temporary closures to recreational fishing would be:
- Little Pine Lagoon, Penstock Lagoon and Woods Lake would be closed to recreational fishing from midnight on December 1 until midnight on December 6;
- the Mersey River downstream of the Olivers Rd bridge to Hoggs Bridge would be closed from midnight on November 24 until midnight on December 6; and
- the Meander River downstream from the Huntsman Lake dam to Barretts Bridge, Long Ridge Rd, would be closed from midnight on November 24 until midnight on December 6.
Inland Fisheries said the competition sites along the Mersey and Meander rivers would close seven days before the competition started because the river venues were small and accessible and wild fish took some time to resume normal behaviour after being disturbed by "angling effort".
"Fishing is allowed in the large section of the rivers that will not be used for the competition," it said.
"These temporary regulation changes are designed to balance support for the championships and the potential disruption to recreational anglers."
