A severe weather warning for damaging winds is in place across the state, with snow expected down to 500 metres on Friday.
The strong winds are expected for the west coast, King Island between 1pm and 4pm on Wednesday.
From 4pm, strong winds are expected across the north coast and Furneaux Islands until about 7pm, the Bureau of Meteorology said.
"These strong and gusty conditions will remain for the rest of Wednesday and continue Thursday," they said.
"Thunderstorms with small hail are possible almost anywhere across the state [on Wednesday] afternoon, and about the west and far south [on Thursday]."

More than 10mm of rain is forecast across the north, west, south and central areas of the state on Wednesday, with up to 25mm falling in elevated areas.
Another 20-25mm is expected on Thursday in the west, with other areas getting about 5mm.
Snow will fall to 700m on Wednesday night, and then drop to 500m on Friday morning.
Frost is predicted around the midlands and the north on Saturday morning, as the snowline rises again.
A sheep graziers warning and bushwalkers weather alert are also current for the state.
