The details follow data in the Environmental Protection Authority's 2018-19 annual report, which showed an increase in the amount of recycling and compost material produced by the state last financial year.

Waste sent to landfill has remained steady, the report noted, with recycled material increasing five-fold and compost activity tripling.

Registration for the kerbside Food Organics and Garden Organics bins was opened by the City of Launceston Council in August 2018 - exceeding expectations in the first month.

A manufacturing facility fire in July caused a brief delay to the supply of the bins, which was soon addressed.

The bins, aimed at diverting organic food and garden waste from landfill, are collected fortnightly and come with a kitchen caddy. They can be purchased from the council for a fee of $65.

"Once a resident orders a new FOGO kerbside wheelie bin it takes about a 15 days for it to be sourced, allocated and delivered," said the council's general manager Michael Stretton.
