A proposal to turn a historical piece of Launceston land into an art gallery, makers workshop, cafe and bar and restaurant, is recommended to be supported.

The application formed half of a proposal to convert the Launceston Gas Works site into a seven-storey car park.
However, the application for the car park has not received support from the Tasmanian Heritage Council.
On a separate application, is a six-level building to be constructed within the circular gasworks structure known as the gasometer.
The ground level would contain a cafe, with the middle four floors to host a new art gallery. That building's top floor would feature a restaurant with views across the city.
This application is recommended for approval by the council.

It is proposed the building would maintain the existing framework structure and reflect the existing cylindrical shape. The gallery would have a building height of more than 23 metres, which is about three metres taller than the existing structure.
A proposal to develop a multi-storey carpark on the subject site, immediately north-west of the gasometer, included a subdivision. However, the car park proposal, and by extension the subdivision, was refused by the Tasmanian Heritage Council.
The TasPorts building, along with Hogs Breath Cafe and the Centrelink and Medicare offices would remain.
"Notwithstanding the existence of the City Park opposite, the site projects a commercial character whilst retaining the essence of the industrial feel of the old gasworks," the application said.
A single representation was received against the development application.
The representation raised concerns about the visual impact on the streetscape, its affects on diminishing the site's significance, the building's height, overshadowing of City Park, and the proposal's compatibility with other buildings in the area.
The council said the building not fitting in with the area was inconclusive, as the Albert Hall, Verge Hotel, Milledge Lane development were in close proximity to the site.
Overshadowing would occur over the public toilets, some pathway and lawn, and part of the duck pond. The council said it was minor overshadowing.
The council will vote to accept the recommendation at its meeting on Thursday at the Town Hall at 1pm.
