The adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" couldn't be more apt in the world of newspaper (and now online) journalism.
There is nothing greater than a startling image to draw your attention to a story. And as you look through The Examiner archives there have been some telling images that don't even need a caption.
The moment captured speaks true volumes. Be it a moment of jubilation, tragedy, anxiety, bravery or capturing a moment in history.
We are lucky here at The Examiner to have some of the most experienced news photographers in Tasmania.
Paul Scambler, Neil Richardson, Phillip Biggs and Scott Gelston have more than a century's worth of experience between them.
They have captured everything from the fanfare of the Pope and Queen's visits to Tasmania, the horrific scenes at Port Arthur, the drama of the Sydney to Hobart, to the joy of families enjoying the events such as the Launceston Show.
News photography works hand-in-glove with our print stories and allows us at The Examiner to literally be your eyes and ears on the ground, bringing you stories that matter to Northern Tasmania.
Those stories and images become historic record, capturing significant events, but they also give a snapshot of the average Northern Tasmanian family, to show others what life in Launceston and our outer regions is really like and how people spend their time connecting with their communities, or sharing their own unique take on topical issues.
To capture their knowledge and stories, The Examiner for the past month has been delivering an weekly Friday email titled Behind the Lens, which brings those that enjoy photography together.
It is well worth signing up to and if you haven't, you can can do so HERE.
Well-known Launceston photographer Philip Kuruvita will also be joining us as a guest columnist for the newsletter and to celebrate, we are offering The Examiner subscribers the chance to win a copy of his newest book Eat, Drink, Love 2.
