Detective Inspector David Wiss said two women were at the Killarney Road home at the time of the incident and escaped injury.
He said police believed the perpetrator had arrived at the property in a dark maroon or red-coloured car and fired shots at the front of the house while the vehicle was stationary.
Detective Inspector Wiss said forensic services had undertaken ballastic analysis during the day to determine the type of firearm used.
He said police did not believe it was a random attack.
"We're certainly investigating a very specific line of inquiry," Detective Inspector Wiss said.
He said there was no evidence to suggest the incident related to family violence.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Tasmania Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers.
Meanwhile, a 17-year-old man who escaped police custody from a security van in Derwent Park on Saturday has been recaptured.
Detective Inspector Wiss said uniformed officers found the youth at a Gagebrook home at 5.30am on Thursday after a series of searches.
It is believed the youth was en route to the Ashley Youth Detention Centre at the time of the escape.
Detective Inspector Wiss thanked the public for its assistance.
