It is believed Mr Hidding, 66, is tossing up whether to run for the Legislative Council seat of Rosevears.
An election for the seat will be held on May 2, 2020.
The sitting independent member for nearly 18 years, Kerry Finch, is still to decide whether to run again.
Mr Finch, who will be 71 next month, said he would announce his intentions within the next month.
He said he was under pressure to "stay on".
"I'm being coy but there are a couple of factors to take into account," Mr Finch said.
"Seven or eight people have approached me keen to stand if I decide not to run."
The former popular ABC presenter for 25 years was first elected in 2002.
Mr Hidding, who has been appointed chair of Lyons for the Liberal Party, could not be contacted for comment.
Both the Liberal Party and Labor Party have opened nominations for the seat of Rosevears.
Liberal president Rod Scurrah said the party executive had decided on Tuesday to open nominations.
The Labor Party also is seeking nominations for both Rosevears and Huon in the South.
Sitting independent member for Huon Robert Armstrong said he also was yet to decide whether to stand again.
"At this stage I would say yes but you never know," Mr Armstrong said.
The former Huon mayor said being in the Upper House "had opened his eyes with the issues coming across his desk".
Mr Armstrong said a lack of affordable housing, poor local roads and forestry issues were important in his electorate.
The Governor is expected to issue the writs for the election in the new year.
