This year, we not only hope to raise $90,000 between now and Christmas, but we also hope to use the 111th appeal to raise awareness about the issues facing tough times in 2019.

Unemployment, homelessness, loneliness and hunger are just a few issues the Empty Stocking Appeal's four Launceston-based charities - Launceston Benevolent Society, Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul, and City Mission - help people deal with daily.

And sadly as Launceston Benevolent Society chairman Don Jones pointed out, more and more people are seeking assistance from charities as they struggle to pay bills and provide food for their families - let alone think about buying a gift for their child/children this festive season.

Christmas is meant to be one of the best times of the year.

A time to celebrate and appreciate what we have with family and friends.

But for many it is not a happy time. Christmas for some is a period of stress; a time when shortfalls or withouts become more evident.

However, as a community we have a chance to make those peoples' lives lust a little bit better with a small donation to the Empty Stocking Appeal.

Every dollar counts and the generosity of Northern Tasmanians never ceases to amaze - particularly that of organisations such as the Rotary Club of Tamar Sunrise through Launceston's Carols by Candlelight.

All funds from the community-spirited event go to the appeal, with an average $14,000 handed over annually in the past six years.

Christmas is the season of giving, of hope, and spirit, and together, we can bring that to everyone in the community through the long-lasting Empty Stocking Appeal.

As many people will tell you, you never know when you will need a hand yourself - personal circumstances can change dramatically at any moment.
