The City of Launceston council formally received a report into the effectiveness of sediment raking and its impacts on the Tamar River Estuary at its meeting on Thursday.

The report found raking had not achieved its primary goals and had resulted in in infilling of the navigation channels.
From here the council will now consider alternative sediment management that is likely to involve the more expensive action of dredging.

The Launceston Flood Authority oversaw the sediment management in the river during 2013 until 2018 at a cost of $1.35 million. The overall cost of the program was supplemented by the state and federal governments.
Once the next study is completed, the council said it would be in a much better position to discuss sedimentation management.
