A fine second-round 69 off the stick gave him the honour.
Greg Levett led the B-grade scratch and outgoing president, Rob Faulkner, was the leading C-grade qualifier.
Quarter and semi-finals were held last weekend and the A-grade club championship will be decided on Sunday over 36 holes.
Kingston will play Greg Longmore after both had tight semi-final wins. Kingston won 1-up and Longmore went to the 19th hole over state captain Mitch Van Noord.
B-grade sees Grant Dohnt play Brendan Bartlett while C-grade sees John Meadows face Peter Candy, both matches over 18 holes.
In handicap divisions, Greg Sawford defeated Roger Green on the 20th hole, and plays Zac Bird who won his two finals in extended holes. Josh Upston plays Paul Elmer in B-grade and Roger Murray plays Paul Nobes in C.
Four score
Played at the well-presented Exeter Golf Club, the men's Northern foursomes were taken out by Mowbray duo James Pyke and Neil O'Brien by one stroke over Steve Hillard and Mike Oliver, of Greens Breach.
The nett division was won comfortably by Gary McLennan (Exeter) and Glen Warmisham (Mowbray).
The women's foursomes saw Amanda Smith and promising junior Alex Hansen, representing Riverside, clear winners from Marie Myrander and Katrina Archer, of Prospect Vale. Victorious nett winners were Leonie Gordon and Vicki Towns, of George Town.
Student champs
The Northern golf student championship was hosted by Prospect Vale Golf Club.
The runaway boys' winner was Ronan Filgate, of Prospect Vale, with a fine four-under-par 67 off the stick.
Oscar Burrell, of North West Bay, finished runner-up.
Lily Caelli, of Prospect Vale, won the girls' section from Mowbray's Jorjah Bailey.
The best gross and nett scores for both boys and girls 15 years and under, were then automatically eligible to represent Tasmania at the Jack Newton junior golf, national 15 years and under, school golf championship.
This will be conducted at the Coast Golf Club in Sydney between December 2 and 5.
After the Southern country boys and girls championship qualifying event at Colebrook Golf Club, the eight-person team was finalised.
Isaac Roberts (Riverside), Jorjah Bailey (Mowbray) Oskar Small (Mowbray), Ella Murray-Williams (Tam O Shanter), Matthew Duffy (Mowbray), Tailah Mowat (Ulverstone), Jordan Stirling (Kingston Beach) and Mackenzie Thomas (Royal Hobart) will represent Tasmania, who are reigning titleholders.

Hansen carded a three-over-par round of 75 to defeat her nearest rivals Hallie Meaburn, of Royal Hobart, and Mackenzie Wilson, of Tasmania, both on 77 (+5).
Upcoming events
October 26 and 27 are the dates for George Town's annual open tournament and all players are welcome.
A four-ball Ambrose is on the Saturday with both women's and men's 18-hole stroke events.
Entries are at Northern clubs or contact Terry Street 63 823197 or David Painter 63 821467.
Campbell Town have a ladies farmers day on October 29. Enquiries can be made to either Marie Richardson (0459 030734) or Julie Rea (0423 546205).
The ninth East Coast masters golf tournament has been well subscribed this year with a lot of locals not playing to allow players from other clubs to take part.
The men's field has attracted its best ever field of 92 starters and has three emergencies who are unable to be accommodated.
The ladies did also have a sold out field (best ever) of 56 but have recently had two withdrawals because of injury and ill health so there are positions still available if anyone is interested (they can call Stan Hardcastle on 63 725530).
The event is, as usual, a stableford, with three divisions in the men's and ladies'.
Day one sees the men play at Scamander and the ladies at St Helens before Sunday reverses the format. Presentations are made each day.
Magnificent sponsorship from local businesses and the Break O'Day Council has again been forthcoming.
Launceston Ladies have a benevolent day on Thursday, November 7. A Canadian foursome will support New Horizons. Entries and queries to Liz Young, 0408 710390 or email: ladiesgolf@launcestongolfclub.com.au
The C-grade championship of Tasmania is to be played at Scottsdale Golf Club on November 23 and 24.
Entry forms are available at clubs and the Golf Australia-TAS website (www.golf.org.au/golftasmania).
Fundraisers
Local clubs Launceston, Mowbray and Prospect Vale recently held #DoingItForJarrod fundraising days.
Jarrod Lyle was an Australian PGA professional and as an adult became an ambassador for Challenge, a not-for-profit organisation that supports children living with cancer, and their families.
Leuk The Duck, short for Leukaemia, is the Challenge mascot and Lyle wore the Leuk badge proudly.
Lyle passed away in August 2018, however, his work shines on brightly.
Launceston Golf Club raised $2489 and Prospect Vale raised over $1300 while holding a two-ball Ambrose.
The winners were Doug Ryan and Mandy Page, and runners-up were Mark Bassett and Michael Petty.
Scott Richards donated prizes to Challenge for the day.
Mowbray raised $825 on a rain-affected day.
