Holly Geard organised the fundraiser - a 24-hour cycle challenge - as part of an assignment.
She is a Health and Physical Education student, and was required to plan, implement, and review a health program or event as part of her course.
But the Westpac Rescue Helicopter is close to her heart, since it carried her mum when she was injured after falling 30 metres at Central Highlands hike Parsons Falls this year.
"My family and I just want to give back to the helicopter however we can," she said.
"The aim was to raise $1000.
"And my team raised $1500 on its own, so even my team exceeded the expectations that I had."
Ten teams entered the cycle challenge at the Unigym, including one man who cycled for the whole 24 hours himself, and a team of University of Tasmania faculty.
"Pretty amazing for a uni assignment," she said.
"People have said that if I don't get top marks, they'll start a petition."
