Carlton's last show will be on Friday, October 25. He has hosted the popular talkback program, which airs from 9am-12pm every weekday, since 2015.

The spirited Carlton - who, under his 'Spoonman' moniker, became a national fixture on Triple M in the 2000s - said he was grateful for the opportunity he'd been given by Grant Broadcasters, which owns LAFM, to launch a talk show in Northern Tasmania.

"I'm leaving for personal reasons and remain on good terms with Grant Broadcasters.

"My commitment, passion and belief in Tasmania remains unwavering."

Tim Holder, executive general manager of Tasmanian Broadcasters, a subsidiary of Grant Broadcasters, said the company understood Carlton's decision and wished him well for the future.

"The company is appreciative of what Brian and his team [have] achieved, particularly in the area of service to the communities in which Tasmania Talks is broadcast," he said.

Carlton is originally from Sydney and relocated to Tasmania not long before he started in the role at LAFM.

An outspoken atheist with more than 30 years' broadcasting experience, Carlton helped pioneer FM talkback radio in Australia.

In addition to his time at LAFM and Triple M, he has been a presenter, producer and program director at 2UE and 2GB.

Tasmania Talks features interviews with politicians, as well as discussions on local, global and national issues.
