Not many born and bred Northern Tasmanians wouldn't be aware of Launceston's infamous blockie route and antics of those that like to partake in the pointless phenomenon. Well, Launceston filmmakers Dylan Hesp and Michael O'Neill have turned it into an eight-part fictional web series titled Australia's Best Street Racer. The series tells the story of one lonely 18-year-old's journey to conquer the Launceston Blockie Route. Taylor James (Hesp), in his mum's 1994 Holden Barina, attempts to modify his car, pick up chicks and clash with the law, all in the hopes of earning his place as Australia's best street racer. The series was shot entirely in Launceston with a majority Tasmanian cast and crew, and originally conceived through the #ComedyConcentrate initiative Through Screen Tasmania, the Tasmanian Government provided $25,000 into the production, alongside a grant from Screen Australia's Online Production Fund. "We also proudly supported the development of a documentary Small Town Drifter that followed Taylor Forward, a Penguin local, whose love of cars and community inspired Street Racer's main character," Arts Minister Elise Archer said. The series was launch on YouTube on October 3.
