It is also a day Tasmania Police marks on its calendar as one of the busiest, mainly due to the large consumption of legal and illicit drugs which can often lead to violence and disorderly behaviour.
As Richmond and Greater Western Sydney go head to head at the MCG today, authorities will be working overtime to ensure the public remains safe.
No doubt police officers will be staging random breath tests and various checkpoints, patrolling streets and licenced venues for the odd idiot that takes the celebration too far.
They will also be on call and ready to respond to any acts of violence that can often be associated with these types of days.
A 2018 La Trobe University Centre for Alcohol Policy Research study found that family violence assaults rose by more than 40 per cent in NSW on the nights of State of Origin games.
Similarly in Victoria, police have reported bracing for a 20 per cent hike in family violence on AFL grand final day.
Why? Mainly due to increase alcohol consumption, which is a key influencing factor in domestic violence.
A complex issue with many contributing factors, it is one of the sobering reminders that for too many today's celebrations - or commiserations - will be felt hard.
So in short, don't over drink, respect your family and friends, don't get behind the wheel of a car and keep your fists to yourself.
Everyone wants to enjoy the day, so don't be a peanut that ruins the fun for everyone.
Tasmania Police say they don't want to be the "fun police", but at the same time society doesn't want to deal with the fallout from your stupidity.
To avoid being a fool, know when you've had enough and avoid going out after the match. Hand in your keys or arrange a designated driver and just have fun.
Regardless of which team you're barracking for, everyone deserves the chance to enjoy today.
