Tasmania Police Inspector Ruth Orr the initial call was that a pedestrian had been struck, but police have confirmed the man fell after the ute left the Campbell Town football ground club rooms.
"It's travelled for a short distance before he's fallen from that tray, and he sustained a head injury," she said.
Inspector Orr said alcohol was likely to be a factor.
Another man was also in the tray but alighted without injury. Police have not yet been able to speak with the Bagdad man and are unaware of the vehicle, passengers, or driver involved.
"We really encourage them to come forward and speak to police," Inspector Orr said.
She urged people to be aware that travelling unrestrained in a moving vehicle had inherent risks.
