Joshua Josef Barker, 31, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Dale Watson and assaulting Timothy Bumford on March 19, 2018.
Mr Bumford gave evidence about the alleged assault when he took the stand in the Launceston Supreme Court on Wednesday.
The Fastway Courier employee was driving toward Sacred Heart Primary School on York Street when he noticed a black ute stationary on Brisbane Street, the court heard.
Mr Bumford said he noticed the ute because it was in such good condition.
THE TRIAL
As Mr Bumford drove down York Street, the court heard the black ute followed and parked directly in front of the delivery van.
Mr Bumford said he thought the accused was going to ask him about a parcel until he saw the man staring at him.
The court heard Mr Barker asked the delivery driver for a number, but the question caught Mr Bumford off guard.
"I half-heartedly said six and then he punched me," Mr Bumford said.
Mr Baker pulled the keys out of the van's ignition and stabbed Mr Bumford in the leg with them, the jury was told.
Mr Bumford said Mr Baker walked around the front of the van to the passenger side and demanded he get out of the vehicle.
The court heard Mr Bumford kicked toward Mr Baker to push him away.
It was alleged Mr Baker was told Mr Bumford Fastway was killing children and they were all pedophiles.
Mr Bumford said he sought refuge in the primary school while Mr Baker was looking through the parcels via the van's back door.
"I didn't really know where else to go," Mr Bumford said.
