Bateman scored the match-winning try in the dying minutes as Canberra prevailed 12-10 on Saturday night and clinched just their second finals away victory in 24 years.

The star back-rower won the Super League title with Wigan in 2018 and on Saturday Bateman put the Raiders into the NRL preliminary final.

"These are the games I want to play in and we went out there today and got the job done and that's what it's all about," Bateman told AAP.

"I scored in a final once but we lost so that would have to be up there as one of the best tries I've ever scored.

"But full credit to the team. We've worked hard all year and it's exciting what's coming."

Bateman has proved a revelation at the Raiders and the England international is widely considered one of the signings of the year.

The 25-year-old back-rower said he had always backed himself but it helped to play alongside men willing to work hard for each other.

"This is probably the toughest team I've played in. We're a team full of winners and it just goes to show when you're getting results like tonight," Bateman said.

"Everyone else who goes behind in Melbourne, in a final, they'd probably pack their bags and roll over but we've come back twice now and showed what we're all about.

"People have been shocked with how I've gone this year but I was always confident in my abilities. I knew I could play rugby at the standard I've played at this year.

"It was just one of those ones where I wanted to come to Australia and enjoy myself and when I'm enjoying myself that's when I play my best rugby."
