The Launceston Orchid Society president has been busy picking out his prettiest plants in the lead up to their upcoming spring show.

Mr Elinck and his wife purchased their Grindelwald property about eight years ago.

"We had about 100 orchids then, mostly cymbidiums and a few dendrobiums," he said.

They set up an elaborate home for their orchid collection; a greenhouse consisting of different sections, such as a heated, humid area for the species that thrive in warmer, more tropical conditions.

"From there, we went from 100 to more like 1000," Mr Elinck said.

"We've got too many now; it's a full time job not a hobby anymore.

"We've got a few different species of orchids. They don't all flower every year, but this year has been a good year.

"Some of the orchids aren't going to come out until later on this year, about November."

Tasmania is home to about 200 native species of orchids, some of which are included in Mr Elinck's collection.

Each day Mr Elinck spends between two and three hours caring for the orchids, as they were quite a bit different to other plants.

"This time of year we've got to keep a bit of an eye on them," he said.

"Orchids don't like too much water. When in doubt with other plants, you give them more water.

"When in doubt with an orchid, just ignore it. Leave it another week.

"They're funny, orchids. They just thrive on neglect.

"They've got to be quite bunched up before they'll flower, because otherwise they'll keep growing roots.

"They say, 'why should I grow a flower? I'm quite happy to keep on growing and feeding'."

Mr Elinck said when it came to showing orchids, judges were very specific on what they were looking for.

"They need to be nice and round and the flowers all need to look good," he said.

Alongside displays of beautiful orchids, the show will feature potting demonstrations and advice for beginners and enthusiasts alike.
