Development services director Jonathan Harmey will become the Meander Valley Council's acting general manager.
A recommendation to appoint Mr Harmey to the interim role was passed at the council's meeting on Tuesday.
It comes after the resignation of general manager Martin Gill last month.
Mr Gill will leave the council on September 20 after seven years, to take up a position with Queenscliff Council in Victoria.
In other news:
Mayor Wayne Johnston said Mr Harmey's role as acting general manager would begin on September 21, with the council to this week start the process of recruiting a permanent general manager.
"In 10 weeks time we hope to announce who our new general manager will be," he said.
"If we get all our details right and we get the person that we're after, then we will be onwards and upwards from here."
During Tuesday's meeting the council also gave the green light for the Anglican Diocese of Tasmania's Deloraine Parish to build eight townhouse-style units on land adjacent to St Marks Church.
Valued at $1.3 million, the two-bedroom units will be built on church land at 9 East Westbury Place, Deloraine, and will include 13 additional car spaces.
One car park will be provided for each unit, along with five visitor spaces to be available in the common area. The council received only one objection to the application.
