Star mare Mystic Journey, her trainer Adam Trinder and boom four-year-old The Inevitable were all in the spotlight in Victoria on Saturday.

Mystic Journey finished runner-up to Winx in the Victorian racehorse of the year award and Trinder was runner-up to Winx's trainer Chris Waller in the prestigious Fred Hoysted Medal.

On the track, The Inevitable was awesome winning a listed race at Moonee Valley, earning rave reviews from jockey Craig Williams and remaining on target for the $7.5 million Golden Eagle in November.

Although Winx was a clear winner of the horse of the year award with 114 votes, Mystic Journey out-polled some quality horses to finish second with 52 votes, ahead of Sunlight on 47, Cross Counter on 15 and Santa Ana Lane on 12.

Mystic Journey won two races in Melbourne at the start of the season before returning to capture the Australian Guineas and All-Star Mile in March.

The Fred Hoysted Medal, which recognises individual training performances, saw Waller poll 128 votes to Trinder's 121. The other finalists were Charlie Appleby (94), Tony McEvoy (75) and Patrick Payne (44).

The Inevitable's third win in Melbourne was full of merit as trainer Scott Brunton revealed the gelding had not travelled well.

However, despite a slow start and racing wide, the Dundeel gelding smashed his rivals by four lengths.

Brunton said he was now considering a start in the group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield in a fortnight where The Inevitable has firmed to $14.

Young Cressy trainer Cameron Thompson has built a good record with former interstate horses and he struck twice at Spreyton on Sunday with recent stable additions.

Four-year-old gelding Dubai Sky was having his first start for Thompson when he scored a tough win in the Maiden Plate and six-year-old Trojan Storm was second-up for the stable when he comfortably won the Benchmark 58 Handicap.

Both horses have been widely-travelled.

Dubai Sky started his career with Tony Gollan in Queensland before joining Mick Kent in Victoria while Trojan Storm has previously been trained by Matt Ellerton, Tony McEvoy, Saab Hasan and Matt Cumani.

Dubai Sky was the first leg of a treble for Anthony Darmanin while Trojan Storm's rider Craig Newitt finished with a double.

They were Thompson's first winners for the new season but he's had only 13 runners.
