Ms White was "the leader Tasmania needs", Dr Chalmers said.

Dr Chalmers delivered the keynote address to the Labor state conference in Burnie on Saturday in the place of Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese who was unable to attend due to an international travel commitment.

Dr Chalmers said Labor was seeking to learn from mistakes made during the recent federal election where the party lost seats in the North and North-West.

"Clearly, when you look at the result here and in many places around Australia, we didn't get everything right," Dr Chalmers said.

"We are taking time to review what happened in the election campaign, from a campaigning point of view but also from a policy point of view.

"We want to listen and learn. That means getting around to as many communities as we can to listen directly ... so in 2022 we can come back and win back Braddon, and other seats."

Dr Chalmers rejected the notion Labor leader Anthony Albanese had not yet fully transitioned into the role of opposition leader.

"Anthony Albanese has done in record time what many people thought was impossible - he has got this show back on the road," Dr Chalmers said.

Tasmanian Liberal party state director Sam McQuestion said the failure of the Labor leader to attend the conference showed the party had learnt nothing from their "disastrous" election results in the state.

"Albo's snub is the first time a Labor leader hasn't come to a Tasmanian Labor conference for a long time, which speaks volumes," Mr McQuestion said.

"It's clear that Mr Albanese is embarrassed by the Federal and State election campaign results in Tasmania, and wants to stay as far away as possible."

Franklin Labor MHR Julie Collins said the conference gave Labor an opportunity to get out and about in the community.

"[It's] about making sure that, when we develop policies in the lead up to the next federal election, we listen closely and respond to local community concerns," Ms Collins said.
