That's when Tasmanian Badminton president Brent Munday and Northern Tasmanian Badminton president Rodney Lockett came together and created the Hingston-Young Cup, a showdown between the North and North-West to revitalise the sport.
"It's been a long time since we had inter-association matches, since what used to be the triangular series between the North, South and North-West," Munday said.
"But this day and age, travel and other events have taken precedence over that so it was a great opportunity to reinforce the importance of teams events and the close proximity meant we can do it on a week night."

With the North-West taking out the first instillation in 2017, the North fired back last year with a victory, meaning Thursday's Elphin Sports Centre event will break the deadlock.
North-West will enter the event as heavy favourites, boasting four members of the recently-announced Tasmanian side alongside two former representatives.
The tournament concludes the season for both associations with teams selected from local roster competition played throughout the year to remember the legacy of two committed families.
A life member of Tasmanian Badminton Association, Jean Hingston spent decades of her life playing and administrating the sport on the North-West Coast including directing the 1986 Australian carnival held in Ulverstone.
Her son Des has shown the same commitment to the sport with this year's North-West Coastal roster his 39th season as an NWBA member with NTBA's Young family also producing a prolific badminton star.
Eight-time Northern singles champion and multiple Australian title-holder Darren Young says the sport united his family - with his parents, Leon and Beverly, meeting through the sport.
"Mum and Dad started when they were young in the 1950s and eventually dragged us [kids] along, we started playing and got hooked on it," he said.

"Now that they've passed on, it is great to hear they've brought in this Hingston-Young Cup between the North and North-West so hopefully the North can win as they used to.
"Back in Dad's era, they used to have the blazers on and it was big.
"It was almost like the Vics versus South Australia in the football but now it's good to see it coming back after having died off for a 20-year period."
