A team of University of Tasmanian researchers have been awarded a prestigious national science award for a homemade bomb detection device.

The device, which is portable and can detect explosives in less than a minute, took of the Eureka Price in the Outstanding Science in Safeguarding Australia category.
It is expected to be used in mass transit locations like airports and train stations.
The scanner was developed by a research team headed by Professor Michael Breadmore and developed with Grey Innovation, Australian Federal Police, National Institute of Forensic Science, Australian Customs Service and US Homeland Security.
"The instrument can detect homemade bombs of the types used in the Oklahoma bombings, Bali and the Boston marathon bombings," Professor Breadmore said.
It is the product of more than 20 years of research.
