Tasmanians need to prepare for cool weather and oncoming damaging winds, State Emergency Service assistant director Leon Smith said.

"The information received from the Bureau of Meteorology indicates much of Tasmania will be subject to two cold fronts bringing damaging winds, heavy rain, snow and flooding," he said.

"In order to prepare for the strong winds, we ask that people tie down and secure any loose items including outdoor furniture and play equipment.

"Winds of this speed can pick up items like trampolines and debris and carry them some distance, and can blow trees and power lines across roads.

"Farmers in low lying areas within the warning area should consider moving livestock to higher ground given the potential for river and creek rises."

Winds averaging 60 to 70km/h with peak gusts of about 100km/h are possible from about midday Tuesday. Areas above 400 metres could experience gusts up to 110km/h.

Winds are expected to east over the state's south-east by Tuesday evening, but will likely continue overnight in the state's west, centre, and through Bass Strait.

Snowfalls are expected to lower to about 400 metres on Wednesday night.

Conditions are expected to ease on Thursday morning.

Locations expected to be affected include Oatlands, Whitemark, Orford, Strahan, Hobart, Currie, Smithton, and Geeveston.
