After months of patient waiting, families were able to experience the highly anticipated Riverbend Park official opening for the first time.
To some, Riverbend Park might just seem like a park (what is all the bother about, right?) but it represents so much more than that. In 2014, US-website Cities Journal named Launceston as the number one city to move to in Australia and 2013 Launceston was named the most family-friendly city in Australia.
Since those accolades, it's hard to deny that in some areas, life has been tough.
Not unique to Launceston, the entire state has had some tough economic times, but today, there are some confident signs that we are turning that issue on its head.
Tasmania is having a moment and it's high time that Launceston took its share of the sun.
Riverbend Park is an example of that turn-around - something that took a while to invest in has come to fruition and now it can be enjoyed by all residents.
It is the cornerstone of the revitalisation of the whole area, which started with the Seaport and moved through to new retail spaces, a pedestrian bridge and now the park.
Amenities like Riverbend Park are what draws people, not only to visit Launceston but also to live here - and it will help, in its way, as we move towards implementing population strategies to keep population pushing higher and to become more stable.
Through investment such as the Launceston City Deal, and the investment is done on a more local and individual level, Launceston has and will have some creative new spaces, for businesses, individuals and families.
While the confidence is brewing, it's time to look towards the future, and ensure that we don't let this feeling fizzle and be snuffed out.
It's time to cultivate that fire and keep it burning to make sure Launceston truly is one of the best, friendliest, and most networked regional city in Australia.
