Police and emergency services were called to the crash on St Leonards Road about 11.20am.
Acting Sergeant Daniel Knight said investigations indicated the 27-year-old, who was travelling north in a white ute, struck a second vehicle travelling south.
The driver of the ute, who is from St Leonards, then continued for another 100 metres before crashing head-on with a grey jeep.
"It resulted in a massive frontal impact," acting Sergeant Knight said.
In other news:
The man was the sole occupant of the ute.
He was rushed to the Launceston General Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.
The driver of the jeep, a 46-year-old man from Lileah and his 13-year-old son, were uninjured.
Acting Sergeant Knight said police were still investigating the cause of the crash.
