A Parliamentary inquiry into housing affordability heard on Thursday young Tasmanians are not prioritised for public housing, despite accounting for 30 per cent of the wait list.

Youth Network of Tasmania chief executive Tania Hunt told the committee young people waited 66.7 weeks for housing.

Ms McLean said Tasmania needs to provide access to a range of options for medium to long-term housing care which are supported by intensive therapeutic and trauma-informed services.

"When it comes to children and young people who are homeless and alone, they require a continuum of services to meet their care needs and this is particularly the case for those who are less than 16 years of age," Ms McLean said.

"While recent announcements to increase short-term or crisis accommodation options for children who experience homelessness are welcome, there is still much work to be done."

Ms McLean said safe and secure housing for children and young people, regardless of their age, was vitally important to their overall wellbeing.

"Safe and secure housing can impact across the spectrum of factors including wellbeing from how safe children and young people are, to how well they sleep and even their access to good food and nutrition," she said.

Ms McLean said she was looking forward to the recommendations of the inquiry to identify and prioritise care for children who are under 16 years of age and at risk of homelessness and not in out of home care.

"These recommendations, and the government's response to them, will be critical in addressing this issue," she said.
