The video was posted on public Facebook group called And Justice For All Tasmania, and featured the man in a hoodie striking the Evandale statue in the face.

The Glover statue has come under fire in recent months due to its alleged connection to convicted paedophile John Wayne Millwood, with some believing he was the model for the piece.

Millwood's name also features on plaques in Evandale and Campbell Town.

Beyond Abuse's Steve Fisher said people needed to step back and take a deep breath.

"That's a worrying thing because of the fact that, that goes in the same bracket as vigilantism," he said.

"Whilst I can understand fully the emotion around it, I would hate to see good people get in trouble with the law over something like this.

"I would actually say to people, look, let's settle down. We've written to the Glover Society, we've written to the council, and they're considering everything that we've suggested."

He said he would hate to see people get into trouble over something that may not even be an issue.

"We need to sit back and wait before people start getting into what could be significant trouble," he said.

Mr Fisher said the community needed to wait and find out what had happened.

Then rather than getting rid of the statue for good, replacing it.

"It's an iconic statue, and it's important for tourism in the area," he said.

Northern Midlands mayor Mary Knowles said the attack was now a matter for the police. However, Tasmania Police said a report had not yet been received.
