In summarising the trial of a 52-year-old man charged with 11 crimes against six children from three separate North-West families, defence lawyer Donal Craig told the jury the families had 'colluded'.

Throughout the trial, Mr Craig repeatedly asked the complainants and their family members whether they had spoken to the other families about the crimes which are alleged to have occurred between 2012 and 2018.

They denied speaking about the allegations, and the mother of three of the complainants said she did not know the details of what her children were alleging until she read media coverage of the trial.

However, Mr Craig said it was the defence case that the families had colluded on the allegations because they were seeking financial gain through the victims of crime compensation scheme.

This is despite police investigator Detective Senior Constable Taneka Dunham telling the court the mother of three of the complainants refused literature on compensation when it was offered to her.

"The only rational explanation for this is a dash for cash," Mr Craig said.

"When this is over [the mother] will make her move. You can rest assured of that, this is all about the money."

Similarly, during cross examination the accused man told the court he believed the only reason the families would falsify the allegations was for a "pay out."

In his closing statements, Crown prosecutor Jody Dennison said it was not realistic for the families to have concocted the stories.

Mr Dennison said if they had colluded, the evidence given by the witnesses would be more consistent among the complainants and their family members.

Instead, Mr Dennison said, there were times when the complainants and witnesses diverged, but in ways that could be explained by children misremembering details and the passage of time.

Mr Dennison said if the stories had been falsified, it would have made more sense to include the older siblings, now in their early 20s and who have known the accused most of their lives, as they would be more capable of sticking to a script.

Mr Dennison also said in this case the state relied on tendency reasoning, in that the jury could reasonably use the evidence from each of the complainants to bolster the reliability of the other five complainants.

Justice Robert Pearce will summarise the case for the jury on Tuesday before they retire to deliberate on a verdict on the 11 charges.
