The plan aims to balance visitor experience and the local economy, with environmental conservation, as visitor numbers grow by 9 per cent each year.
After first releasing a draft that attracted 144 submissions in response, the new plan has been locked in, and promises the following initiatives:
- Funding for TasWater to undertake a feasibility study to improve wastewater management along the peninsula.
- A new visitor gateway just outside Coles Bay, where tourists can park and be taken by shuttle bus to the Wineglass Bay trailhead. There will also be information on the region and an "architecturally designed" shelter, and a visually attractive corridor leading from the Tasman Highway to the gateway.
- New transport connections, including the shuttle bus, a commercial boat network, and new walking and cycling trails.
- Upgrades to facilities at "experience nodes" including at Moulting Lagoon and Honeymoon Bay
Minister for the Environment, Parks and Heritage Peter Gutwein said the plan "set out a sustainable future" for the peninsula.
